How dangerous is a groin hernia (inguinal hernia)?

Radiating pain can occur when the tissue is pinched in the hole, especially when the patient is walking. Hernia becomes dangerous when a portion of the intestine becomes trapped in the hole, since the organ “asphyxiates”—its cells gradually die. At this stage, the patient's life is endangered, and surgery is required immediately. Such a dangerous situation can be avoided if an operation is undertaken earlier, however.

What other diseases can cause pain in the groin region?

Pain in the groin can be a symptom of an irritation of the ligaments caused by a heavy or malpositioned load. Other disorders that can be painful in the groin region include inflammation of the periosteum (thin membrane covering the surface of bones), or alterations of the spinal column or the hip joint. In males, the scrotum and the adjoining organs must also be carefully examined. There are a variety of possible disorders, each of which requires a particular therapy. It is essential, however, to understand pain in the groin is a warning signal that points to a problem which must be rapidly corrected in order to prevent severe or chronic damage.
